Video Producer – “PiG SiM” F-111 Mission Simulator Museum Documentary Part 1
Video producer Andrew Forsyth was asked to work with Thales Training and Simulation to create a 4 part series for an aviation museum display, housing the recently decommissioned F-111 Mission Simulator. This followed the retirement the F-111C Fighter/ Bomber after 40 years of active service with the Royal Australian Air Force.
As an expert video producer for information technology subjects, Andrew worked with writer John Benson and Senior Qualified Flight Instructor Steve Clarke to craft an engaging and informative piece will give life to the static display.
PiG SiM is the story of how the Simulator was used in the 2 ½ year “Conversion Course”, in which pilots learn everything from how to switch the engines on to how to operate the aircraft in complex combat situations. Particular emphasis is given to safety and rehearsing for a range of malfunctions, which could be practiced in the simulator without exposing aircrew to the potentially catastrophic consequences, they could face in the real world.
It was of particular importance to the training and simulation team that the video producer was able to depict accurately the exact configuration of the cockpit controls during simulated aircraft emergencies and other procedures.
In Part 1, crews learn basic operation of the aircraft, day and night flying & weapons systems. Affectionately known as “The Pig” because it “snuffled around in the dirt at night”, the F-111 was more complicated than the space shuttle, according to Program Manager Mike Renie, who previously worked for NASA as a software programmer and who studied under Neil Armstrong during his Aeronautical Engineering degree.
